Associate Professor of Geoinformatics and global and environmental change - with a focus on Remote Sensing
Department of Geosciences and Natural Resource Management (IGN)
Faculty of Science

University of Copenhagen

IGN is looking for candidates for an Associate Professor position strengthening the research and teaching in the development of applications of Earth observation (EO) and geoinformatics in the cross-field between human/physical geography and global and environmental change.

The position will partly consolidate existing and fast expanding research areas and partly develop new fields of enquiry. The candidate should engage in research resolving around the human-climate-environment nexus under global environmental change. The position requires someone with extensive experience in EO and GIS, relevant to the analysis of climate and environmental shifts. Applicants are expected to have a background showing expertise in creating geo-informatics tools and conducting innovative research to enhance the evaluation of land change (identifying signs of land degradation) as well as discerning the human and climatic factors influencing it, with the ability to work at various geographical scales, from local to worldwide levels. Advanced processing and analysis skills of various types of time-space integrated geo-data (e.g. time series of climate data, EO data and socio-economic data, digital methods) are considered an asset, including ecosystem change analysis and analysis of impacts of extreme climate events and ecosystem resilience.

The candidate will be part of ongoing projects at the department and in cooperation with key partners, universities, private and public companies.

Applicants are required to have university level teaching experience, documented teaching competencies and must be able to explain and reflect upon own teaching practice and portfolio. Formal pedagogical training or supervision equivalent to the University of Copenhagen teacher training programme for assistant professors is required.

Duties include the applicant’s own research, development of the field, assessment tasks, grant applications, and research management such as supervision and training of research fellows and other staff. The successful applicant must also teach, supervise, prepare and participate in examinations (the substantial part within remote sensing, and applications of remote sensing), and fulfill other tasks requested by the Department.

Assessment of applicants will primarily consider their level of documented, original scientific production at an international level, including contributions to developments in their field, as well as their documented teaching qualifications. Managerial and out-reach qualifications of applicants including ability to attract external funding will also be considered.

Six overall criteria apply for associate professor appointments at the University of Copenhagen. The six criteria (research, teaching, societal impact, organizational contribution, external funding and leadership) are considered a framework for an overall assessment of the candidates. Furthermore, each candidate must be assessed according to the specific requirements stated in the job advertisement. Please read more at https://jobportal.ku.dk/videnskabelige-stillinger/kriterier-for-videnskabelige-stillinger/dokumenter-til-meritering/5b_Criteria_for_recognising_merit_-Associate_professors.pdf .
