The Department of Physics and Astronomy, Aarhus University, Denmark is seeking applications for a permanent academic employee who will provide laboratory support for the advanced cryogenic temperature and high magnetic field research facilities, especially those in the Villum Center for Hybrid Quantum Materials and Devices (HQMD) headed by Prof. Yong P. Chen established with the funding support from Villum Foundation. The center focuses on studying quantum phenomena at cryogenic temperatures and high magnetic fields in hybrid structures and devices formed by a variety of quantum materials (2D layers, topological insulators, kagome crystals, superconductors etc). More information can be found at here.
Additional laboratory support may be required for the operation of a cryogenic temperature STM located at the Interdisciplinary Nanoscience Center (iNano), in particular activities required for the operation and training in nanoscale opto-electronic studies. This STM is part of the Center for Interstellar Catalysis (INTERCAT), headed by Prof. Liv Hornekaer. More information can be found here.

The position is available from 1 May 2025.

The candidate:

The successful candidate will provide laboratory support to the research performed within the center(s) and may be expected to:
  • Operate and run low-temperature (0.32K) high-magnetic field (16T) Unisoku type STM system used within the laboratory, including routine maintenance and upgrades of the system.
  • Support and train students and researchers in the operation of apparatus.
  • Support and train students and researchers in performing in-operando STM measurements on nanodevices.
  • Further support for the operation of the low temperature (4K) Createc type STM. Especially training in advanced type electroluminescence experiments for studying opto-electronic properties.
  • Contribute to the design of new components as required, (e.g. sample holders, vacuum systems, optical systems, electronic components).
  • Develop new experimental approaches including necessary software codes.
  • Work closely with the technical staff of the vacuum, mechanical and electronics workshops at the department.
  • Maintain the IT infrastructure of the group (group shared drive, data acquisition machines etc.) in conjunction with the IT support group.
  • Develop documentation regarding the correct operation of the various instruments in the laboratory.
  • Responsible for implementing good laboratory practices and safe laboratory behaviour.
  • Perform other general administrative duties as required.
  • Contribute to proposals and articles writing.
  • Contribute to other activities that may be requested by the department, as appropriate.

Qualifications:

  • A PhD in experimental physics or related field, experience in surface science.
  • Expertise in the operation and maintenance of low temperature STM systems is essential.
  • Expertise in standard STM operation including advanced spectroscopy techniques.
  • Expertise with in-operando experiments using low-temperature STM systems.
  • Expertise in cryogenic systems including systems operating with superconducting magnets at high magnetic field.
  • Experience in the design of components for the above-mentioned systems.
  • Knowledge of one or more programming languages (e.g. Python, LabView, Igor Pro) is desirable.
  • Good planning, organizational and communication skills.
  • Good team working skills.
  • The ability to work independently.

Place of work and area of Employment:

The place of work is Ny Munkegade 120, 8000 Aarhus C and the area of employment is Aarhus University with related departments.
