Cloud software engineer/research software engineer for HPC research application development at Center for Humanities Computing

Center for Humanities Computing (CHC) is looking for a new employee (AC-TAP) to oversee, develop and implement applications for research at the DeiC Interactive HPC facility.
DeiC Interactive HPC is an interactive digital research environment built to support the needs of researchers for both computing and data management making complex digital technology accessible to all users working with both open and sensitive data.
The provided applications covers a broad area of types and systems, e.g., Jupyter Lab notebooks, RStudio, VS Coder, apps for genomics, engineering, agent based modelling, etc. Applications in DeiC Interactive HPC are containerized in Docker environments and orchestrated by a Kubernetes cluster.

Job description

 The position includes the following areas of responsibility
  • Develop, implement and deploy new container apps for research
  • Evaluate and design container apps in collaboration with researchers
  • Take active part in developing the app portefolio at DeiC Interactive HPC
  • Participate in back office support for DeiC Interactive HPC
Qualifications
We seek experts with most of the following qualifications
  • Broad range of software skills in the relevant areas such as:
    •     Container and virtualization technology (i.e., Docker and Kubernetes)
    •     Cloud computing
    •     Complex systems debugging
    •     Knowledge of distributed computing technologies
    •     Scientific software design
    •     Scientific workflow tools
  • Strong background in Linux systems
  • Relevant programming skills (e.g., shell scripting and Python);
  • Ability to work productively both independently and as part of an interdisciplinary team.
  • An interest and willingness for learing new methods and technologies in a fast moving and higly skilled work environment
  • Relevant and documented education or experience working with the above technologies and fields
  • Experience with devops practices (e.g. git and github, continuous integration and deployment, software documentation)
  • Good verbal and written communications skills in English
 Who are we?
 CHC is a research and development unit at Aarhus University that collaborates with researchers from arts and humanities (Faculty of Arts) at Aarhus University. Our offices are located in Nobel Parken, 8000 Aarhus C and holds about 30 employees whereof approximately half are juniors.
CHC values a healthy work-life-balance and offers work conditions where flexible hours and some amount of remote work is possible. We value the effect of meeting up in the hallways or at the coffee machine and having serendipitous conversations with colleguages.
 We are a mixed group of nationalities at CHC, and as a consequence we predominantly speak English at the office and at meetings to be inclusive of our international colleagues.
CHC represents Aarhus University in the DeiC Interactive HPC Consortium that operates DeiC Interactive HPC. The other members of the consortium are the eScience Center (SDU) and CLAAUDIA (Aalborg University). DeiC Interactive HPC's computing resources are located at SDU and Aalborg University while Aarhus University (CHC) is responsible for the advanced services offered to researchers using DeiC Interactive HPC.
The Danish e-infrastructure Cooperation (DeiC) coordinates Danish digital infrastructure as an umbrella for the eight Danish universities to ensure delivery of computing, storage and network infrastructure to Danish research, teaching and innovation.
Condition of Employment
The starting date is October 1, 2024. Appointments are for full time positions for a limited time period of at least 2 years with the possibility of extension.
