Niels Bohr Institute at Faculty of Science, the University of Copenhagen is looking for a Laboratory manager with effect from 1 May 2025 or as soon as possible hereafter.

About us
The Novo Nordisk Foundation Quantum Computing Programme (NQCP) is establishing a talented and diverse international team to create a cutting-edge quantum programme in the heart of Copenhagen, Denmark. At the Niels Bohr Institute, University of Copenhagen, where the formulation of Quantum Mechanics was born 100 years ago, we aim to establish an international quantum computing programme, generously funded by the Novo Nordisk Foundation, that will drive research and innovations at multiple levels - from developing scalable quantum processor technologies to solutions for the quantum-classical control and readout interface, and all the way to quantum algorithms and applications. The long-term mission of the programme is to develop fault-tolerant quantum computing hardware and quantum algorithms that solve life-science-relevant chemical and biological problems.

About the job
We are looking for a highly motivated individual to organize, maintain and improve the associated experimental laboratory at NQCP and assist the team of scientists and research engineers.

The ideal candidate is familiar in at least one of the areas of research lab equipment infrastructure, mechanical/electrical engineering of experimental setups, or ultrahigh vacuum techniques.

The scope includes managing lab improvements, maintenance, and expansions, as well as working with the local workshops and our equipment suppliers to guarantee up time and access to all lab facilities. The work interacts closely with a small team of technical staff members and a facility manager.

The responsibility will also include interaction with our suppliers for scheduled maintenance, immediate repair, and upgrading work of our equipment (including lasers, measurement electronics, vacuum pumps, and cooling compressors). We are seeking an organized applicant with problem solving skills, with a keen eye for the evolving infrastructure needs of the lab, as well as good interpersonal skills for day-to-day interaction with students and staff members.

As a Laboratory manager of one of the premier quantum labs of Europe, the position will provide the candidate with valuable experience, as well as many opportunities to make a positive impact in a highly dynamic environment of scientists and engineers trying to push the boundaries of quantum science

The ideal Candidate should be:

· Solution oriented, detail oriented, reliable, with a broad technical skillset

· Fluent in English, oral and written (Danish is a big plus)

· Strong communication skills

· Hands-on problem solver, engaging

· Research and/or lab experience, ideally mechanical/electrical background

· Ideally, physics background and/or familiarity with vacuum techniques

· Highly organized

· Enjoys supporting the students and engineers in their experimental work and needs

· Enjoys creating awareness with the lab users to maintain a functional structure

· Interested in solving technical problems and planning ahead

Qualifications

  • BSc, MSc in mechanical or electrical engineering, electronics, physics or related.
  • Experience with vacuum systems and related equipment
  • Experience in facility supplies for advanced laboratory equipment
  • Ability to assume a technical leadership role while driving an innovative culture and growth mindset.

We offer:
Life in Denmark is supported with strong social services (free universal healthcare, free/subsidized language courses, paid parental leave, subsidized day care institutions and excellent public schools). Our work culture is very egalitarian and prioritizes work life balance. Dual career families are the norm, and workplaces offer flexibility to support everyone in having both an exciting career and good family time. Danish cities are known for having excellent infrastructure, for example through widespread bike path networks. We can also offer a thriving food-scene, excellent museums, and beautiful natural scenery.

Terms of salary and employment
The employment and salary are made in accordance with the Circular on the Collective Agreement concerning academics in the state sector concluded between the Ministry of Finance and AC (the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations).

The employment will be as an academic employee or special consultant and the salary is based on seniority. Negotiation for salary supplement is possible.

The working hours are 37 hours per week on average. The working hours are flexible.

The position is limited to 31 December 2029 and the appointment will be subject to receipt of a security clearance.
