We are looking for a dedicated M.Sc. student for a master thesis project in the oncology group at Nordic Bioscience for the purpose of investigating the interplay between extracellular matrix remodeling, fibroblasts and cancer cells in vitro.
BACKGROUND
The tumor microenvironment (TME) plays a crucial role in cancer progression, influencing tumor growth, metastasis, and response to therapy. A key component of the TME is the extracellular matrix (ECM), a complex network of proteins that provides structural support to tissues and regulates cellular behavior. Among the cells that interact with the ECM are cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs), which are known to promote tumorigenesis by remodeling the ECM and creating a more favorable environment for cancer cells. Collagen, a major structural protein within the ECM, is often altered in tumors, leading to changes in tissue stiffness and architecture that can facilitate cancer invasion. The interactions between CAFs and cancer cells are particularly important in driving these ECM changes, yet the precise mechanisms involved remain poorly understood. Understanding how CAFs and cancer cells collaboratively remodel the ECM, particularly through collagen production and degradation, is essential for developing new therapeutic strategies to target the TME and inhibit cancer progression.
THE PROJECT
This master thesis project focuses on developing a co-culture model of CAFs with cancer cells to investigate matrix remodeling within the TME. The primary objective is to examine how the interaction between CAFs, and cancer cell lines influences the production and cleavage of collagen matrices.
Key activities within the project will include:
YOU
You are a highly motivated M.Sc student with a background in biology, biochemistry, biotechnology or a related field, preferably with previous knowledge in cell biology. You are eager to learn new skills, bring a collaborative mindset and able to work as part of a research team. We expect you to be full time at Nordic Bioscience during the project period.
THE COMPANY AND THE ONCOLOGY TEAM
Nordic Bioscience is a biotechnology company specializing in the discovery, development and commercialization of biomarkers for various diseases. Nordic Bioscience has more than 25 years of experience in ECM research and biomarker development. At Nordic Bioscience you will find an educational environment that will teach you both research and commercial aspects of science. The key focus of the oncology team is to understand and quantify ECM remodeling in the TME. We aim to help patients by developing novel tools to improve patient care and aid drug development.
Are you interested?
If you want to hear more about writing your master project at Nordic Bioscience, please contact Research Fellow Annika Hettich ([email protected]). We are evaluating applications on a continuous basis, so please apply as soon as possible. The application should include a few motivational lines about yourself, a transcript of grades, and a CV. Potential candidates will be invited for interviews as they apply, and we reserve the right to terminate before the posting expires.
Project starts January/February 2025
