We seek a dedicated and independent PhD student with an interest in microbiological ecology of plant-based food products. Your research work will focus on the prevalence and behaviour of pathogenic sporeforming bacteria in plant-based foods and ingredients and will be carried out as part of a recently funded Plant2Food (Novo Nordisk Foundation) project. As PhD student you will join our team in the Food Microbiology and Hygiene Research Group at the National Food Institute. You will also work closely with our industrial partners and partners at Wageningen University in the Netherlands.

Responsibilities and qualifications
Your main task will be to investigate the prevalence, genetic diversity and behaviour of pathogenic sporeforming bacteria in plant-based foods and ingredients. You will test factors affecting germination and growth of spores as well as conducting challenge experiments in relevant food model systems. Also, you will assess the kinetics of germination and growth to determine the overall risk for plant-based foods given their characteristics. You will receive training in planning and execution of experimental work in the laboratory with accompanying data analysis and reporting as well as dissemination of results in collaboration with your supervisors.

We expect you to have a scientific education in the field of microbiology, preferably with practical experience in experimental work with food and microorganisms. You must be able to work both independently and collaboratively with other researchers and our industry partners, as well as master English in both speech and writing.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • A relevant master's degree in life sciences with a microbiological focus.
  • Experience with experimental microbiological work.
  • Experience with microbiological detection methods, including qPCR.
  • Some experience with sequencing and use of bioinformatic tools.
  • Some experience with quantitative microbiology.
  • Solid abilities in planning and structuring as well as the ability to be solution-oriented.

You must have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree.

Approval and Enrolment
The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU. For information about our enrolment requirements and the general planning of the PhD study programme, please see DTU's rules for the PhD education
