In connection with our Novo Nordisk foundation challenge grant ‘Energy Materials for the Gut (EMGUT)’ we are looking for a PhD student to work with nature-inspired materials to be used in ingestible devices. The materials will be used to harvest energy for sensing, drug release or gut sampling. One focus point will be development and modification of nature-inspired materials. A range of materials, including mycelium from fungi, will be tested to provide required energy generation. We offer a highly creative, collaborative and ambitious work environment. 

This project will be part of the IDUN research section, led by Prof. Anja Boisen at DTU, Department of Health Technology (DTU Health Tech). IDUN is a highly cross-disciplinary research section with over 50 members, that focuses on development of micro and nanotechnology-based sensors, detection systems, drug delivery devices and energy materials.

Responsibilities and qualifications
You will be responsible for designing and fabricating materials, inspired by nature, that can be applied in primarily piezoelectric and ferroelectric energy harvesting. The materials will be characterized and applied in our activities such as drug delivery, sensing, and gut sampling. This work will be carried out in close collaboration with your colleagues at DTU Health Tech and at DTU Energy. You will initially be engaged in material development and characterization. This involves the selection of appropriate materials, including polymers and bioceramics, and alignment of the dipole moment in the materials by a poling process. Later, the developed materials will be implemented in devices and tested in in vitro and in vivo experiments in suitable animal models. You are expected to have a solid background in materials science, biomaterials, and if possible, basic electronics. You are highly independent, self-motivated and enjoy collaboration in a multidisciplinary academic environment. You have the ability to drive the project, supervise students and achieve ambitious goals.       

The work will be carried out within the framework of IDUN. In IDUN, our motto is ‘bringing science to life’ and we believe in openness, inclusiveness, having ambitions, making a difference and collaboration. 

You will play a role in the drug delivery part of the research section, interacting with several members working in different disciplines, such as biology, microfabrication, pharmaceutical science and polymer science. The project is highly interdisciplinary, and we expect that you enjoy teamwork and are good at coordinating your work with your colleagues.

You must have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree.

Approval and Enrolment 
The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU. For information about our enrolment requirements and the general planning of the PhD study programme, please see DTU's rules for the PhD education

Salary and appointment terms 
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. 

The period of employment is 3 years. Starting date is 15 November 2024 (or according to mutual agreement). The position is a full-time position.
