The Rennie group at the Department of Biology, University of Copenhagen invites applications for a postdoc position focussed on developing computational methodologies for understanding the role of RNA modifications in gene regulation.

The position is part of the Novo Nordisk Foundation–funded project “Probabilistic Modelling Approaches for Deciphering Post-Transcriptional Gene Regulation.”

Further information on the Department is linked at http://www.science.ku.dk/english/about-the-faculty/organisation/.

The expected start date is May 15, 2025, or as soon as possible thereafter.

The project
Modifications to RNA play central roles in many cellular processes, yet the specific mechanisms by which they influence RNA fate remain unclear. In this project, we aim to develop, test, and apply new computational methodologies for analysing RNA modification readouts from large transcriptomic datasets. This position will focus on developing probabilistic deep learning frameworks to identify molecular determinants underlying modification patterns from short- and long-read datasets.

Who are we looking for?

We welcome candidates with strong backgrounds in computational biology, mathematics, statistics, or computer science. Candidates should have prior experience in probabilistic modelling and/or generative deep learning.

Required/Desired Qualifications

  • Knowledge of statistical modelling and machine learning
  • Experience analysing transcriptomic datasets, particularly single-cell and/or Nanopore long-read sequencing data would be considered an advantage
  • Proficiency in Python or R, and familiarity with good coding practices (e.g., GitHub)
  • Curiosity and interest in RNA-based gene regulation
  • Excellent English language skills and willingness to present work in diverse settings, including international conferences
  • Enthusiasm for interdisciplinary collaboration; the Rennie Group works closely with several leading experimental labs locally and internationally

In addition, applicants must hold a PhD or equivalent in computational biology or a relevant field. Candidates expecting to complete their PhD before the start date of the position will also be considered.

Our group and research- and what do we offer?
The Rennie group (https://rennielab.io/) is based in the Section for Computational and RNA Biology (SCARB, https://www1.bio.ku.dk/english/research/scarb/) at the Department of Biology, Faculty of SCIENCE, University of Copenhagen. Our group focuses on developing and applying computational and statistical modelling frameworks applicable to large transcriptomic datasets to derive key biological insights in the field of RNA Biology.

The department offers creative and stimulating working conditions in a dynamic and international research environment. SCARB is composed of 13 strong research groups, and the Rennie group works closely with with a number of computational-focussed groups (in particular Andersson and Sandelin groups), as well as groups specialising in RNA biology (Auxillos and Brodersen groups). Postdocs also benefit from dedicated networking opportunities, scientific clusters and local clubs.

Any inquiries about the positions can be made directly to Assistant Professor Sarah Rennie, [email protected]

Terms of employment
The position is covered by the Memorandum on Job Structure for Academic Staff.

Terms of appointment and payment accord to the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and The Danish Confederation of Professional Associations on Academics in the State.

The postdoc position is a fixed-term full-time position limited to a period of 2 years.

Negotiation for salary supplement is possible.

The application, in English, must be submitted electronically by clicking APPLY NOW below.

Please include

  • Curriculum vitae
  • Diplomas (Master and PhD degree or equivalent)
  • Research plan – description of current and future research plans
  • Complete publication list
  • Separate reprints of 3 particularly relevant papers
The deadline for applications is March 15th 2025, 23:59 GMT +1 and interviews with selected candidates are expected to be held early April 2025.

After the expiry of the deadline for applications, the authorized recruitment manager selects applicants for assessment on the advice of the Interview Committee.
