Niels Bohr Institute

Faculty of Science

University of Copenhagen

The Niels Bohr Institute, Faculty of Science at University of Copenhagen is offering a 2-year postdoc position in Physics of Ice, Climate and Earth (PICE) commencing June 1, 2025 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The Green2Ice project is funded by the ERC and aims to determine when Greenland was last green. A key part of this research involves analysing basal ice samples from the Greenland ice sheet and dating them. The postdoc project, which is fully funded, primarily focuses on dating trapped air using Ar/Ar dating. Since ⁴⁰Ar accumulates in the atmosphere due to the decay of ⁴⁰K, this method allows us to determine the age of the entrapped air.

The postdoctoral researcher will work closely with a technician on this project, which has a significant experimental component. This includes developing and modifying parts of the existing measurement system. We are therefore seeking experimentally skilled applicants with expertise in mass spectrometry.

Additionally, the postdoc’s work may extend to other Green2Ice aspects, such as clumped oxygen isotopes, and may involve teaching responsibilities.

Our group and research - and what we can offer

The ERC Synergy program Green2Ice offers a unique opportunity to perform research within a very interdisciplinary group reaching from ice core drilling in Greenland to developing and applying novel dating techniques (cosmogenic and radiogenic nuclides, OSL/IRSL, modeling of gas and isotope diffusion) from all the Greenland deep ice cores to place constraints on past waxing and waning of the GrIS.
The research group consists of researchers from the University of Copenhagen, Université libre de Bruxelles in Belgium and the CRPG (CNRS, Université de Lorraine) in France. The research groups will host workshops, meetings and exchange personnel between them. The research is world leading and the aim to reconstruct the Greenland ice sheet will lead to a better understanding of sea-level rise in the past and in the future.

The Copenhagen group is a part of the section for Physics of Ice, Climate and Earth at the Niels Bohr Institute, Faculty of SCIENCE, University of Copenhagen. We are located in Copenhagen.

We offer creative and stimulating working conditions in a dynamic and international research environment.

Our research facilities include modern laboratories, ice field camps and computer facilites.

Further information on PICE at the Niels Bohr Institute can be found at https://www.nbi.ku.dk/english/research/pice/. Inquiries about the position can be made to Prof. Thomas Blunier, Niels Bohr Institute, [email protected], +45 35 32 05 84.

The position is open from June 1, 2025 or as soon as possible thereafter. This is a time-limited position of up to 24 months.

The University wishes our staff to reflect the diversity of society and thus welcomes applications from all qualified candidates regardless of personal background.

The position is covered by the Memorandum on Job Structure for Academic Staff.

Terms of appointment and payment accord to the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and The Danish Confederation of Professional Associations on Academics in the State.

Negotiation for salary supplement is possible.
