Centre for Journalism, Department of Political Science and Public Management, University of Southern Denmark, Odense invites applications for a postdoctoral position in the SafeChilDe project. The position begins 1 February 2025 and lasts 24 months.

Job content
The SafeChilDe project is funded by TrygFonden and contains three work packages. Work package 1 focuses on the legal aspects of children being exposed to misinformation on social media. Work package 2 focuses on children's experiences with misinformation on social media in everyday life, while work package 3 focuses on developing a didactic game that can empower school children to navigate safely between credible information and misinformation on social media.

As a postdoctoral fellow in the SafeChilDe project, you will be part of work package 3 and work on the development, design, testing and implementation of the didactic learning game. The purpose of the game is to develop and strengthen the critical digital literacy of school children making them capable of discerning credible information from disinformation on social media.

As an applicant you are expected to have experience with:

  • developing, designing, and coding online, didactic games, such as for example the game Bad News. We aim to develop a research-based game as a key outcome of the SafeChilde project.
  • developing and conducting effect studies with experimental designs.

If you do not have all the experience, we are also looking for candidates who are capable of quickly learning the necessary skills needed for developing, designing, coding, and testing an online didactic game.

Also, it is a preference – but not a must – that you:

  • speak and write – or are capable of quickly learning to speak and write – Danish in order to make the testing and implementation of the game at Danish schools as efficient as possible.

In addition, it is expected that you are experienced as a scholar in publishing papers in relevant international journals and have experience in disseminating research results to a broad audience.

As a postdoc, you will be employed at the Centre for Journalism at the Department of Political Science and Public Management and will collaborate with the Digital Democracy Center and the Department of Design, Media and Educational Science at SDU. For a detailed description of the research profile and activities, please visit the websites of the sections.

The Department of Political Science and Public Management believes in fostering a stimulating and inspiring environment for both faculty members and students. The department's ambition is therefore to recruit, develop, and retain talented scholars committed to both academic excellence and departmental development. Furthermore, the department wishes our staff to reflect the diversity of society and thus welcomes applications from all qualified candidates regardless of personal background.

For more information about the project and the position, please contact professor Claes de Vreese, [email protected], or associate professor Jonas Nygaard Blom, [email protected].

Application, salary, etc.

Appointment to the position requires a PhD or equivalent and will be in accordance with the salary agreement between the Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations.

The position is in principle full-time and has a duration of 24 months.

The application must contain:

  • Application detailing qualifications and motivation
  • Detailed CV
  • Certificates/Diplomas (MA and PhD degree)
  • A research plan (max. 1 page) for the next 2 years that sketches tentative idea(s) for the development, design and testing of the didactic game.
  • A complete list of publications, which indicates which publications are most relevant for the position.
  • Up to 3 of the most relevant publications. Please upload a pdf for each publication. NOTE: If publications have been co-authored, co-author statements must be a part of this pdf and must include information like in this example. The statement is just for your inspiration.
  • A teaching portfolio as documentation for teaching experience, and if relevant, supervision qualifications. Formal application instructions and guide for teaching portfolio may be found here.

All non-Danish documents must be translated into English, and documents should not contain a CPR number (civil registration number) – in this case, the CPR number must be crossed out.

Applications that are incomplete may be rejected without any substantive evaluation.

Assessment of applications will be done under the existing Appointment Order for universities. Applications will be assessed by an academic assessment committee that determines whether applicants are qualified to be a postdoctoral fellow according to the Scholarly Qualification Matrix. The committee may request additional information, and if so, it is the responsibility of the applicant to provide the necessary material. The committee reserves the right to arrive at a decision solely based on the material submitted.

Shortlisting may be used in the assessment process.

When the assessment committee has submitted its report, the applicant will receive the part of the evaluation that concerns them. The assessment report will subsequently be forwarded to the head of department who will assemble an appointment committee. The appointment committee will manage and complete a series of job interviews with especially promising applicants. On the basis of the applications, the written assessments, the job interviews, and a deliberation within the appointment committee, the Head of Department determines which candidate(s) will be offered the position.

Applications must be submitted electronically using the link "Apply now" on our website. Uploaded files must be in Adobe PDF (unlocked).
