Center for Grundtvig Studies and the School of Culture and Society, Aarhus University, invites applications for a full time position of 37 hours weekly as Research Assistant in Digital Textual Heritage. The position is a temporary position, running for two years commencing September 1, 2024.

Place of employment: Aarhus University, Center for Grundtvig Studies. The center is located on two addresses: Nobelparken, Jens Chr. Skous vej 7, 8000 Aarhus C, and Vartov, Farvergade 27A, 1463 København K, Denmark. The applicant is expected to work primarily in Aarhus.

The position

We are seeking an innovative and dedicated research assistant with experience in project management, and in high-quality digitization of textual cultural heritage material such as bible translations and hymnals. The Center for Grundtvig Studies is a research institution committed to advancing scholarship through research, dissemination, and the publication of a digital scholarly edition of the works of N.F.S. Grundtvig.

The primary responsibility will be to oversee the daily operations of the project: “Computing Christianity. Establishing 31 Danish Bible Translations and 12 Hymnals (1740-1953) as a High-Quality Digital Corpus” funded by the Carlsberg Foundation. This will entail two main tasks: to locate the 43 subjects for digitization at Det Danske Bibelselskab and Vajesenhusets Forlag and to govern the digitization process.

Qualifications

Applicants must have a MA or equivalent qualifications in Theology, Studies of Religion, History, Danish or related areas.

Applicants must furthermore be able to document: 

• Experience with project management.
• Experience with networking in the GLAM industry.
• Knowledge of high-quality textual digitization tasks.
The following skills are considered an advantage:
• Experience with OCR-procedures and Transkribus.

Past research achievements will be assessed based on the active research time of the applicant in question. We therefore ask applicants to specify any career breaks they have had (for instance due to maternity/paternity leave) in order to gauge their research productivity.

Applicants are expected to contribute to the department’s academic environment. We emphasise the importance of good working relationships, both among colleagues and with our students. In order to maintain and develop the department’s research environment, the person appointed is expected to be present at the department on a daily basis.

The Work Environment

Center for Grundtvig Studies is located at two addresses in Aarhus and Copenhagen. Work on the Digital Scholarly Edition is carried out in Copenhagen by a team of ten philologist and five student assistants. The successful applicant will contribute to center’s academic standards.
