Software developer with interest in developing globally leading wind energy tools

We are looking for a skilled Python developer with experience in Docker or Linux to help create software tools that disseminate our wind energy research and models.

The Department of Wind and Energy Systems (DTU Wind) at DTU is a mission driven university department. Our data and models are used in research projects, industry, and the broader public. You will work on both commercial and free tools that enable us to continue advancing the research into wind energy. In close collaboration with scientific and technical colleagues, you have a direct impact on bringing tools to a global audience and promoting a renewable energy future.

This position is in the Resource Assessment and Meteorology Section (RAM), located at our Risø campus. The RAM section conducts research related to the assessment of wind resources for wind energy generation and the estimation of loads on wind turbines and various other structures. As part of the dissemination of the research, the RAM section has developed several python packages, web APIs and Web Applications, including the Global Wind Atlas, and PyWAsP which you will help to support. Working in the RAM section provides you with access to HPC systems, a canteen with healthy lunch options every day, and opportunities to learn more through in-house seminars and the ability to attend conferences and courses.

The job
Within the RAM section, you will join an existing tech team, which is focused on developing solutions for end users and maintain systems that are vital to the development of scientific models.

This position will afford you the opportunity to learn new skills and offers flexibility as we are often investigating and developing best practices across the rest of the department.

The work involves the following main areas:

  • Design and development of REST APIs for scientific code bases, working alongside the researchers who developed the models
  • Port models from papers or other languages to Python for coupling to our other tools
  • Help manage software projects via GitLab
  • Work in research projects to help achieve project goals
  • Enhancement of existing and development of new code bases with a focus on documentation, rigorous code testing, and automation of app production and deployment

The successful candidate will be expected to collaborate with other sections within the Wind and Energy Systems Department, in cross-disciplinary projects.

Our expectations of you
We expect the candidate to have strong skills in Python and have some experience with Linux and Git. They should be a good team player and have good communication skills (excellent in English both oral and written). A background in renewable energy or science is a plus.

We are looking for someone with the following technical skills:

Python:

  • Experience designing and developing APIs with Python
    • Preferably using FastAPI
    • Preferably experienced with using Pydantic models for validation
  • Experience with building and developing using Docker
    • Preferably with docker-swarm experience
  • Experience with developing Python packages
    • Preferably with knowledge of Python’s scientific stack including XArray
    • Preferably with general knowledge of wind energy and energy systems
  • Experience with collaborative software development using Git
    • Preferably via GitLab

What we offer in return
We offer an interesting and challenging job in an international and welcoming environment, with good work life balance. You will be part of a dynamic and pioneering team developing next generation software and applications of science and technology emerging from DTU Wind Energy. We place emphasis on a high level of professionalism among our staff, so skills development is an integral part of our organization. We offer great flexibility in the position and are focused on providing a high level of satisfaction and well-being among our staff. In the area of technical and natural sciences, DTU is one of the leading research and education institutions in Europe.

Salary and appointment terms
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (AC), in accordance with the OAO-S Joint Agreement and the organization agreement for IT employees (Prosa) in the service of the state or other relevant agreement.

The position is a full-time position. Starting date is 1 October 2024 (or according to mutual agreement).

Application and contact
Please submit your online application no later than 4 August 2024 (23:59 Danish time) . Open the “Apply now” link, fill out the form and attach your motivated application, CV and exam certificates.

Interviews are expected to be held in week 33.

If you would like additional information about the position, please contact Tech Lead Neil Davis at [email protected]  or Head of Section Jake Badger at [email protected] .

Applications received after the deadline will not be considered.

All interested candidates irrespective of age, gender, race, disability, religion or ethnic background are encouraged to apply.
