Software engineer for development of genetic database to help doctors and researchers at Department of Genomic Medicine, Rigshospitalet

The OSCAR DREAM project is an extension of the OSCAR project, dedicated to unlocking the potential of Danish health data. Funded by the Innovation Fund Denmark, we are committed to developing and testing solutions that provide access to data from all electronic health record (EHR) systems in Denmark. The goal is to enrich the data sets with registry data and ensure they are available in an anonymized form for clinical research both nationally and internationally.

The Department of Genomic Medicine holds a combined high-throughput DNA/RNA sequencing and bioinformatics platform, that offers a wide-range of genomic and transcriptomic analyses, including human whole-genome sequencing, to hospitals in Region Hovedstaden and Region Sjælland. As part of the Danish National Genome Center, we further participate and contribute with sequencing, bioinformatics, and quality assessment for the national genome sequencing initiative. The candidate will be a part of the Section of Bioinformatics at Department of Genomic Medicine without having production related duties as part of a dedicated project development team.

Job Description:

We are seeking a Software Engineer with experience in database design, as well as front and backend development, to join our dynamic team of bioinformaticians, molecular biologists and medical doctors.

The candidate will be instrumental in fulfilling the OSCAR DREAM project’s objectives, focusing on the integration, anonymization of EHR data and large-scale genomic data to support clinical research and healthcare innovation. The work will be conducted in close collaboration with expert colleagues at the department, Broad Institute, and The Danish National Genome Center.

Key tasks of project development team

• Design and build a database that supports petabytes of genetic data and integrates EHR data from multiple sources.
• Based on gnomAD framework (https://gnomad.broadinstitute.org) build a public resource for genetic information, including both frontend and backend.
• The solution should comply with some standards in the area (e.g. FHIR and OMOP) and be ready for integration with international collaborations (one or more of GA4GA API specifications)
• Participate in the development of shared service models for clinical research, facilitating faster and more efficient clinical trials.

Qualifications:

• Master’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field
• Proven experience in database design, development, and management
• Strong skills in both frontend (HTML, CSS, JavaScript) and backend (e.g., Python, Java, Node.js) development
• Strong collaboration and communication skills
• Experience working in healthcare or clinical research projects is a plus
