We are offering an 18-month position as a staff scientist within the B10k Avian Genome Sequencing project, commencing 1st February 2024 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Our group and research

The Globe Institute’s Center for Evolutionary Hologenomics consists of ca 50 people, whose research integrates aspects of laboratory and computational genomics with microbiomics, in order to answer questions related to both basic and applied biology.

Project description

The B10k project aims to produce reference quality genome sequences for as many of the ca. 10,000 avian species as possible. The project is a large international consortium, although coordinated between Copenhagen (Prof Tom Gilbert) and China (Prof Guojie Zhang). As part of this we wish to hire an Academic Employee who will report to Prof Gilbert in Copenhagen, who will be principally tasked with collating high molecular weight DNA containing specimens from collections around the world, and coordinating the work relating to performing QC on the DNA, conversion of the DNA into stLFR libraries, and the logistics behind arranging sequencing of the libraries at facilities in China and Latvia. Secondary tasks will include managing and QC assessing samples for use in DNA analyses of historic avian samples, and their subsequent conversion of the DNA into NGS compatible sequencing libraries.

Your job

The main responsibilities will consist of:

  • Cataloguing of tissue samples received
  • Managing processes including extraction of DNA from blood and tissue samples using a Kingfisher platform, QC on extracted DNA using a Fragment Analyzer, construction of BGISeq compatible stLFR libraries
  • Managing acquisition and subsequent processing of ancient DNA from historic samples
Profile

We are looking for a highly motivated and enthusiastic staff scientist with the following competencies and experience:

Essential experience and skills:

  • Experience with the methods behind extracting both HMW and ancient DNA, as well as performing and interpreting QC on that DNA
  • Demonstrated expertise of organisation and participation in similar projects
  • Familiarity with BGISeq library construction methods, including in particular the stLFR method
  • Familiarity with SCR library construction methods
  • Prior expertise working within a team while maintaining autonomy
  • Written and spoken fluency in English and Danish
Place of employment

The place of employment is at The Globe Institute, Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen. We offer creative and stimulating working conditions in dynamic and international research environment.

Terms of employment

The employment as staff scientist is a full-time position for 18 months, with starting date 1st February 2025.

Salary, pension and terms of employment will be in accordance with the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and AC (Danish Confederation of Professional Associations). The monthly salary will be based on the number of years of work experience (seniority) with the possibility to negotiate a salary supplement based on prior experiences and qualifications. The employer will pay an additional 17.1 % to your pension fund.
