We are looking for a highly motivated and independent staff scientist to support our efforts in gnotobiology eight hours per week to commence 1 January 2025 or after agreement.

Our research

One of our key research areas in the group ‘Laboratory Animal Science and Welfare’ is to study the role that the gut microbiome has on reproducibility and translatability of animal models for human diseases. For this purpose we use germ-free (i.e. completely sterile) isolators for housing mice without microorganisms and transplanting them with microbes of interest.

Your job

You will join a multi-disciplinary research team working on improving preclinical research using murine models with defined gut microbiota compositions. Your tasks will mainly be related to activities in the isolators in close collaboration with researchers and animal technicians primarily responsible for the daily management of the germ-free facility:

  • Research support in the isolators such as help perform studies with gnotobiotic mice
  • Bacterial culture tests of sterility in isolators
  • Handling and taking samples from the animals
  • Aseptic handling of materials going in and out of the isolators
  • Preparation of sterile isolators for use

You will be expected to contribute to and support the ongoing research projects in the group on an ad hoc basis when needed; disseminate your expertise to new lab members and support the lab management.

  • You have documented competence to perform animal experiments (FELASA category AD), and experience with handling and minor procedures in germ-free mice
