Join DanSTAR: Your Gateway to Rocket Science!

 Hey there, future rocket scientist!

Do you know what real rocket science is?.. correct! Recovery systems…. Are you a student with a passion for applied mechanical engineering. Do you want to take an active part in getting a record-breaking rocket down in one piece? Look no further! At DanSTAR we are currently looking for passionate engineers to learn about recovery systems, and prepare the recovery system of our to date most advanced rocket, Fornax, for launch .

What will you be working on?

The recovery system on Fornax consists of three individual parachutes and has been designed, revised and built over the past two years. It is a highly complex system, optimized for strength, weight and redundancy. DanSTAR needs people with a thorough understanding of the system, and someone who has experience in testing and using the system. Meaning, you will get to test, optimize and improve the current system, and be responsible for the system at upcoming launches. You will be working with other engineers, as well as working closely with the structures and avionics teams of DanSTAR who will be assisting you with the electronics and implementation of the system. The tasks you will be responsible for include:

  • Assembling the recovery system for tests and launch

  • Calculating estimates, e.g. for forces exerted on parachutes

  • Aerodynamics simulations

  • Designing tests for recovery system and performing them.

  • Work with composite materials.

  • Planning the recovery procedure for launch

  • R&D work such as a module for making the rocket float on water

  • And other awesome stuff – your suggestions are always welcome!

About DanSTAR:

We are a student run organization, based at DTUs (Technical University of Denmark) Skylab - consisting of students from across universities (ITU, DTU, CBS). We are dedicated to teaching ourselves real-life rocket science – something you won't find anywhere else in Denmark! From financial bookkeeping to technical decisions, everything is handled by our members. We're pushing the boundaries of what's possible in a student association, aiming to reach further and higher into the sky.

Our Mission:

We're on a mission to build a small, scalable bi-liquid rocket (Fornax) capable of completing a full flight event, including recovery. This project is about building DanSTAR's infrastructure, knowledge, and skills for even larger future undertakings. Fornax is projected to launch during the summer of 2025 in Portugal in the European Rocketry Challenge (EuRoC).

What We're Looking For:

  • Currently enrolled in a bachelor’s or master’s degree program in engineering

  • Ability and willingness to work well in a team – collaboration is key!

  • Passion for rocketry and aerospace engineering – you’ll be surrounded by people who live and breathe this stuff.

  • Independence: You'll be expected to work independently on your tasks, but don't worry – at DanSTAR we learn together and work as a team, so you’ll always have a great support system.

  • A keen interest in rocket science and a drive to learn and contribute.

  • DanSTAR is a student-run organisation, hence this is a volunteer position. We expect a time commitment of about 9 hrs/week – and sometimes more when testing gets intense. Willingness to put in the effort is key.

Need more convincing? Here is why you should join:

  • Hands-on experience: Get real-world experience in chemical engineering

  • The freedom to bring your ideas to life and grow professionally in the process.

  • Collaborative environment: Work with a group of passionate students who share your interests.

  • Access to dedicated facilities on campus to work on our projects.

  • The freedom to bring your ideas to life and grow professionally in the process.

  • Be part of a team that builds rockets! Do we need say more?

  • The opportunity to participate in rocketry competitions around the world!

So, if you're ready to take on new challenges, learn a ton, and have a blast doing it, we'd love to have you on board! If you are interested, please fill out the form below with your relevant information.
