The Department of Biomedicine at Faculty of Health at Aarhus University invites applications for two positions as a postdoc to advanced genome engineering technology and gene therapy as per 1 November 2024 or as soon as possible thereafter. The positions are fixed-term full-time positions for 2 years.

The Department of Biomedicine prioritises diversity and a good work environment, as this is a prerequisite for groundbreaking research. In a diverse and international research environment, dedicated employees are looking to generate new knowledge within biomedical research areas such as infection and inflammation, membranes, neuroscience and personalised medicine. The Department of Biomedicine provides research-based teaching of the highest quality and is responsible for a large part of the medical degree programme. Academic staff contribute to the teaching. English is the preferred language in the laboratory, at meetings and at seminars. The department employs approx. 500 people from all over the world, and they make use of the department's modern laboratory-, core- and animal facilities. The Department of Biomedicine focuses on innovation, entrepreneurship and collaboration with business and industry, and numerous researchers from the department have established companies to develop new medicinal treatments founded in professional scientific basic research. You can read more about the department here and about the faculty here.

About the research project

The research projects are supported by the Novo Nordisk Foundation data science programme (CRISPRnet) and the Lundbeck Foundation Ascending Investigator (LNP-CRISPR). The overall aim of our research projects is advancing genome engineering technology and applications in gene therapy by improving its design and delivery. The CRISPRnet project aims to develop a more accurate and robust deep learning model for CRISPR design through the generation of high throughput activity and specificity dataset in cells. We will use the high-throughput CRISPR on-target and off-target detection methods, TRAP-Seq and SURRO-seq, which were developed by our group. The LNP-CRISPR project aims to improve and develop in vivo CRISPR delivery efficiency and specificity through the optimization of lipid nanoparticles (LNP). Both projects will be carried out at the hosting lab (www.dream.au.dk) at the Department of Biomedicine, Aarhus University, and in close collaboration with the research teams from UCPH and other institutions.

Your job responsibilities

As Postdoc your position is primarily research-based but may also involve teaching assignments. Your primary tasks are conducting research within the field of genome editing technologies and develop gene therapy using lipid nanoparticles-based delivery methods. You will contribute to the development of the department through research of high international quality. In your daily work, you have a close interaction with competent colleagues. In your daily work, you will work closely with colleagues on your project, where you will receive supervision and guidance.

Your main tasks will consist of:
  • Independent research of high international quality, including publication.
  • Research within the field of genome editing technologies, including CRISPR and other newly evolved systems.
  • Design and development of high throughput CRISPR lentiviral libraries used for on-target and off-target activity measure.
  • Design, testing and optimization of gene editing tools and delivery methods.
  • Creation of gene edited and therapy cell models, like HUVECs.
  • Analysis of deep sequencing data from CRISPR screening.
  • Optimization and development lipid nanoparticles for CRISPR delivery.
  • Performing in vivo CRISPR therapy studies with animal models.
  • Teaching and assignment supervision.

You will report to the Professor Yonglun Luo.

Your competences
You have academic qualifications at PhD level with a background within genome engineering and personalized medicine, and experience with molecular and cellular biotechnologies, such as CRISPR gene editing, gene therapy, lentiviral packaging, CRISPR (lentiviral) libraries, large-scale CRISPR on-target and off-target activity profiling, lipid nanoparticles generation, ribonucleoprotein delivery, flow cytometry, and culture of human cell lines like HUVECs.

As a person, you have good interpersonal skills, are inclusive and team-oriented and able to contribute to a good work environment. We expect you to be fluent in oral and written English.

In order to be assessed as qualified for a Postdoc position, you must meet these academic criteria.
