The Department of Biology at Aarhus University, Denmark, invites applications for two professor positions to advance the Department’s research profile in key disciplines of biology. The positions are to be filled by June 1, 2025, or as soon as possible thereafter, subject to negotiation. This is a readvertisement of the positions ”Professor in Environmental DNA, Department of Biology, Aarhus University, Denmark” and “Professor in Plant Evolution and Biodiversity, Department of Biology, Aarhus University, Denmark”.  Previously submitted applications will be taken into consideration unless they are withdrawn.


The Positions


We seek two professors to enhance the Department's research within biology. Applicants with expertise in the following areas are particularly encouraged to apply:
  • Environmental DNA (eDNA), focusing on biodiversity and molecular ecology.
  • Plant evolution and biodiversity, particularly using genomic and biogeographic approaches.
  • Molecular ecology and evolutionary biology
  • Systematics and phylogenetics
  • Biogeography and macroecology
  • Conservation biology and sustainability
Accomplished candidates will be expected to develop or expand an independent research program, attract significant external funding, and contribute to teaching and supervision at all levels, including bachelor, master, and PhD students.


Responsibilities


  • Conduct high-quality research and secure external funding
  • Teach and supervise students at undergraduate, graduate, and PhD levels
  • Develop courses in your area of specialization
  • Contribute to the Department’s strategy and administration
  • Develope collaborations within the Department, Aarhus University, and internationally



The Candidates


Applicants must have an internationally recognized academic track record and documented experience in:
  • Research leadership and funding acquisition
  • Teaching and supervision at university level
  • Collaboration across disciplines and with international research environments
  • Scientific communication and outreach
We seek candidates with a solid publication record and an ability to establish and supervise innovative research within biology, contributing to the Department’s vibrant academic environment.


Assessment Criteria


The qualifications of each candidate will be evaluated according to the Criteria for evaluating candidates for scientific positions at AU Natural Sciences.

Assessment will include:
  • Research output, including peer-reviewed publications
  • Proven ability to attract external funding
  • Research leadership experience
  • Teaching and supervision experience
  • International collaboration and networking

About the Department of Biology


The Department of Biology (www.bio.au.dk) hosts research programs and teaching curricula covering all major biological sub-disciplines. With approximately 40 tenured academic staff, 60 postdocs, 40 PhD students, and 60 technical staff, the Department provides an engaging and collaborative environment. It offers BSc, MSc, and PhD study programs and has well-established international partnerships. While English is the primary working language, the appointed candidate will be expected to communicate and teach in Danish within four years of employment.

Deadline

Application procedure

Shortlisting is used. This means that after the deadline for applications – and with the assistance from the assessment committee chairman, and the assessment committee if necessary, – the head of department selects the candidates to be evaluated. The selection is made on the basis of an assessment of who of the candidates are most relevant considering the requirements of the advertisement. All applicants will be notified within 6 weeks whether or not their applications have been sent to an expert assessment committee for evaluation. The selected applicants will be informed about the composition of the committee and will receive his/her assessment. Once the recruitment process is completed a final letter of rejection is sent to the deselected applicants.

Formalities and salary range


Natural Sciences refers to the Ministerial Order on the Appointment of Academic Staff at Danish Universities under the Danish Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation.

The application must be in English and include a curriculum vitae, degree certificate, a complete list of publications, a statement of future research plans and information about research activities, teaching portfolio and verified information on previous teaching experience (if any). Appointment shall be in accordance with the collective labour agreement between the Danish Ministry of Taxation and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. Salary depends on seniority as agreed between the Danish Ministry of Taxation and the Confederation of Professional Associations.
